I don't know what kind of computer you have, but on a Mac you can play any region of DVD so long as you use vlc instead of DVD Player. Does something like this apply?
[ETA: Hm, or you used to be able to. Not so sure now.]

If not, I'd maybe say - also look at portable DVD players, not just laptops. They're down to double figures nowadays.
