The Hobbit

I enjoyed *The Hobbit*, which will be my only movie for 2014. Last year I saw the Trek reboot. The year before the first part of *The Hobbit*. So, going to the movies was a big deal for me.

Even though it was about 45 minutes too long and featured giant spiders, I still really enjoyed it.

Some notes:

· Almost all the civilisations they reached seemed to be remarkably sterile, with no children and no visible way of getting their food. Perhaps this reflects Tolkien’s own experiences of life in a basically all-male citadel in the university system. Oxford did not need to be self-sustaining, always with fresh new minds coming in, so perhaps an all-male company made sense to him.
· I found the total rolling over of the Bard regarding rescuing his own children inexplicable. Wasn’t that town a trading centre? Couldn’t he have sent his kids downstream a bit to avoid the dragon devastation? Or even up to the elves – a life as servants of the elves is still better than being crispy fried by a dragon.
· Also, the behaviour of the folk there was just weird. They have a legend saying that the return of the king under the mountain brings them money and death and they go, whoo! off you got then king!
· Nice to see a random person of colour in the Dale. Shame she will be hit by the dragon in the next movie.
· I was surprised at the lack of mining skill displayed by the dwarves. Aren’t they meant to be able to work stone – rather than just whacking it?
· My not-so-secret love for the Gimli/Legolas pairing was given a big boost by seeing another dwarf/elf pairing. Love at first sight, what is more! Of course, in my mind there was already the example of the dwarfish/elven team who built the Great Gate, a classical era example of inter-species love. But this pairing definitely included an element of lust as well, so, excellent… hoping for more Gimli/Legolas and about to consume some Kili/Tauriel.
