I was wondering if anyone can recommend a cheap tree lopper? Like, less than $500 for two trees? Failing that, does anyone have a long ladder I can borrow?

YES! That would be amazing!

I've had quotes of $1,400 and $1,000 which seems like a mighty waste of a lot of money. Would some time in the week after Swancon suit you?
