Hooray! Finding the next few books for the Queer Lit challenge turned out to be incredibly easy.
Pearl is currently obsessed with Julia Donaldson's toddler books, *Hippo has a Hat* and *One Mole Digging a Hole*. When I looked on the back cover I saw that the illustrator Nick Sharratt 'lives in Brighton with his partner, Jon'.
I have no qualms in counting this pair for the challenge, as books for toddlers rely so much on the illustrations. There are generally only five or six words per page - so few that Pearl has memorised quite a few. The illustrations are what really make the books pop.
The illustrations are full of humour, some of which Pearl gets now - like the toad whose tracksuit is too big and the pig whose jeans are too tight in *Hippo has a Hat*. Other jokes she will get soon, I think, like the tiger who buys a spotted shirt and the leopard who buys a stripy skirt. Some will wait quite a while, like the fact that camel buys a camel coloured coat.
In short, these are funny, sweet books that appear to be perfect for her at the age of two and a quarter.
