American politics – I am interested in the barrier currently swaddling the White House. I can’t remember there being one before in my lifetime. Please advise if I am wrong.

The last one I know of was the fence that Nixon put up around the White House to stop the Dewey Canyon III protests in 1971 That was a very moving protest lead by Vietnam vets who had intended to return their medals. Instead, they threw them over the fence that Nixon was cowering behind.

OTOH, Nixon had far better instincts than Trump in that he told the Police to back off from the vets who would have public sympathy and to instead target the long haired hippies. He didn’t get the Police to teargas them so he could go to a church to hold a Bible upside down and savour the smell of his own hands burning.

I’ve been listening to the ABC podcast on the dismissal. If you thought it was impossible to hate the Governor General more, you would be wrong.

In contrast to the month long delays in responding by the PM about religious liberties and Aboriginal deaths in custody, I had a reply from my local Federal representative in 17 minutes agreeing that she will do what she can to stop the 'nonsense' of doubling the HECS on arts degrees.

The Federal Government has gone to a second round of consultation on their idiotic Religious Discrimination bill. This is highly unusual and is a sign that they must have been flooded with negative responses.

If you want to comment on this Bill you can go to: https://www.ag.gov.au/Consultations/Pages/religious-freedom-bills-second-exposure-drafts.aspx

I feel disgruntled. What I wanted for Mother’s Day was a change of Government. What I got is Peter Dutton.

What a week. New PM *and* Book Week. That's too much for me.

Children went as Danny, Champion of the World, and Hermione Granger.

Despite the ridiculousness of our ever-rotating array of PMs, I would still prefer this to the American system where each party is stuck with the President til death, impeachment or new election.

I am amazed to say that Alexander Downer may be making me feel positive about 2018.

A man I usually dislike put principle above party or political allegiance. Perhaps this, plus the Alabama election, are a sign of more positive things to come.

the week

So, what a rollercoaster this week has been.

On the bad side: the American election, the triumph of hatred, racism and misogyny, and the inevitable effects on Australia’s drift to the right. We finally got to go to the incontinence clinic and they think that Ruby has two to five years to go until continence. We also got to see the orthopaedics people who said that there is nothing that can be done to relieve the pain in her feet, knees and hips. She just has to live with it. The lion at the zoo died unexpectedly.

On the good side: The thirteen month wait to get into the incontinence clinic is over. I was so depressed that I went to the beautician and pampered myself (for the first time in eight years). Ruby likes her new pet fish. Hilary won the popular vote. Because Americans don’t have compulsory voting, it’s not 50% of the population who voted for hatred but only 25%. Because I had the day off to go to medical appointments with Ruby, I also got to go to the school excursion to see *Snugglepot and Cuddlepie* which was surprisingly good. I particularly liked the way they made the Banksia men still scary but less racist. Here’s a picture for non-Australians, with bonus Snugglepot and Little Ragged Blossum.

Yep, that’s about it on the good side, a less racist Banksia man than was envisioned in 1915.

hope to attend the rally against the privatisation of Western Power on Tuesday. I'm feeling that now is a good time to send a strong message to Government to resist the trends shown in America.

Entirely by coincidence, I was today completing a biography of Marx. William Morris wrote: 'It does not matter a rap, it seems to me, whether the robbery is accomplished by what is termed surplus value, or by means of serfage or open brigandage. The whole system is monstrous and intolerable.... It is enough political economy for me to know that the idle class is rich and the working class is poor, and that the rich are rich because they rob the poor. That I know because I see it with my eyes.'

Have the Americans had a Federal election in the last generation where the results were generally accepted? My memory is 2000 – Bush was accused of stealing the election by refusing to count the Florida votes (because he did). 2004 – Bush was accused of stealing the election with dodgy electronic vote counting machines made by a Republican who promised to ‘win’ him the election. 2008 – Obama undermined by a whisper campaign that he wasn’t really an American. 2012 – ditto.

2016 – I am pretty sure the results will be contested again and some people will not accept the new President has due authority.
