Overview

This is a quick update from Emma Hawkes, lucky 2009 DUFFer. This update is to let you know about the progress of fundraising in Australia since 2009 and to also give you a more detailed break down of the results of the 2011 DUFF race.

My DUFF report is still available in hard copy. Email me at ehawkes at iinet.net.au for details. Or I can send you a PDF electronically. Also, there is a visual diary that you can get electronically. Again, email me and I’ll send it through to you.

Australian Fund Raising

Here’s a summary of fundraising in Australia since 2009:

Sale of art at Anticipation in 2009 - $31
Votes for 2010 in Australia - $1058 of which $198 was Paypal, the remainder in cash/ cheques
Sale of DUFF report - $76.20
Auction at Swancon 2010 - $104
Reward for early report - $500
Nomination Fees for 2011 race - $50
Auction at Minicon 2011 - $41.50
2011 votes - $1,025 Of which $355 was Paypal, the remainder was cash/cheques*
Swancon 2011 art show - $8
Swancon 2011 auction - $214

So, the voting is the main way to take money in, with the reward for the early submission of the report as a lucrative plus on the report writing.

It’s kind of hard to see what sells well in auctions. At the Swancon 2011 auction, a fantasy anthology signed by Ellen Datlow, Terri Windling and Neil Gaiman went for a mere $16 while an unsigned short story collection by Shaun Tan went for $70 (though 2010 was Shaun Tan’s year).

* For a comparison, US$435 was donated in the 2011 in North America.

I've changed the booking to the Halo Restaurant at 12:30 on Monday 23rd (next week!).

It's on Barrack St Jetty, with a great view of the river. Hope to see you there!

I'm thinking a lunch for John Herz, the 2010 DUFF delegate, on, say Tuesday 24th August at the Halo restaurant on Barrack Street Jetty. Who would be free for this?
emma_in_dream: (supernatural)
Last year fandom was good enough to send me to Anticipation, the WorldCon in Montreal, as the Down Under Fan Fund (DUFF) delegate.

For those who want to know about my trip, about American fandom, and about a great con, my trip report is ready to buy. (As you know, all the money made from the sales goes into the DUFF fund for the next winner.)

How to Get the Trip Report

You can get the report in one of two ways.

Paypal me $5AU and email me, and I can send you a PDF - but be aware that it is 7.1 mb in size. I can also send you a scanned copy of my visual journal - which is 3.7 mb in size.

Alternately, you can get a hard copy posted to you. The price is slightly higher to include postage -$5AU plus postage:

Within Australia - $1.20

New Zealand - $3.00

Rest of World - $4.30

How to Pay for the Trip Report

You can Paypal me at ehawkes@iinet.net.au

Or you can send me a cheque at this address - 9/36 Cape Street, Osborne Park, 6017, Australia.

Or you can email me to sort something else out - ehawkes@iinet.net.au

Conclusion

Remember, your money goes to a good fannish cause!

I thought it would be great to have a meal with John Herz, this year's DUFF delegate. He arrives on Saturday 21st August so I'm thinking of something at lunch time on Sunday 22nd August - That would probably be easier than organising an evening get-together so close to WorldCon.

Can you let me know if you are interested in coming along?

John Herz is this year's DUFF winner. He is stopping off in Western Australia on his way to WorldCon, so we have the chance to meet up with the delegate of American fandom.

I am hoping to find someone with a spare bedroom who could put him up for two nights. I'll be showing him around, but my tiny house does not have space for a guest.

John will be arriving on the afternoon of 21st August and leaving on Monday 23rd August.

Thanks for the voting in the DUFF race, fellow fen.

We took in $1053 in votes, much from a few very generous donations.

The Down Under Fan Fund is now open for voting!

The Down Under Fan Fund has encouraged closer ties between Australasian and North American Science Fiction fans through the alternating exchange of representatives. DUFF delegates this year will come from North America to Australia for Aussiecon 4.

You can vote online at:

http://wrevenge.com/duff2010/

Or you can give a ballot to me directly. But be aware that voting closes the day before Swancon, 31 March!
