I spent most of the fight with Snoke's guards going "Yes, that's impressive, but what's the point of all this? Who even are these people?"
But I realise, looking back, that I didn't ever question the way the film treated the stormtroopers, even though I've read some of those fanfics too. I think that on some level I've come to take it for granted that the movies are going to go on treating them like objects.
