The good news – we now have an IPad.
The very good news – Pearl is very happy with the IPrincess dress up game which she has been longing to own for the past year.
The technological question – can I read Kindle books on an IPad? Specifically, an art book about Frank Dicksee with lots of illustrations.

How anxious should I be?
Jun. 10th, 2013 07:29 pmI am totally unclear about the level of anxiety I should have about the NSA apparently tracking… lots of people, all the Americans, plus a whole heap of other people?
The New York Times apparently thinks it is unworthy of a front page discussion. Ditto the ABC and the BBC. The Guardian has a heck of a lot about it, but they did break the story so I guess they would.
The comments section runs to pages but appears to boil down to:
1, Well done, the whistle blower is a hero. Shame we can’t change the system.
2, Spambotty messages saying he is a traitor.
3, Yawn, we already knew this.

1, Pearl has not inherited my total inability to work technology intuitively. I spent 45 minutes trying to get a sheet of jammed paper out of the printer, including shaking it upside down. Pearl walked over as I sat by it in despair, and effortlessly opened the rear paper tray which I had not noticed was there.
Then, of course, I could not get the printer to shut again, and with a careless flick of her finger she was able to put the printer back together.
2, Ruby has an optimistic spirit. I made a hula skirt from a template in the Wiggles magazine and it didn't work terribly well. She looked at it and decided it was really... an octopus costume!
3, I am really hoping to pay off the overpayment at work by the end of the financial year. After that I will be paid for doing my extra hours. Really looking forward to it.

Oh for the love of mike
Feb. 16th, 2013 08:36 pmI cannot see my stinking bookmarks. I complained about it at the slash gathering today and someone picked it up and they miraculously appeared. I took it home and they are all gone again.
I have searched and searched and I can see nothing on-line that explains why instead of a list of bookmarks I see total blackness, no images of the bookmarks at all.
Edited to say: And now they are back again. Why? Why?

New computer
Feb. 16th, 2013 08:00 pmHooray! I have the new Macbook Pro. I quite like though I have found setting up all my defaults again tiresome. And it has some idiotic features like READ ME which appears only to function to make the already small screen smaller.
One thing I can't seem to run on the computer are the slideshows and movies I made on my old computer in IDVD and iMovie 2006. Are these programs not supported on the 2012 model?
I found a discussion on the Apple board which says that IDVD is no longer provided. This seems odd as how can you burn slideshows and movies to disks then?
And is the new version of Imovie incompatible with earlier versions? If so, bother.

ITunes update
Sep. 16th, 2012 06:31 pmAh ha! It turns out that the Australian store has heaps fewer options than the American ITunes. If you go to the bottom you can search the stores of other countries.
So, the good news, it's not that I can't do a simple search. The bad news, apparently the model for distribution of media is completely stuffed. I could get an American account and then (maybe) it would work but frankly it is too hard. It's like they actually want people to illegally download; they put as many barriers as possible in the path of buying it legally.

OK, I managed to set up an ITunes account and I searched for some (embarrassing) TV shows I wanted to download... and I could find virtually none of them.
Possible explanations:
1, I have stuffed up the search.
2, ITunes in Australia offers a more limited selection than in the USA. Perhaps you only get what has already aired or been on Foxtel?
Now I have to tell you the terrible shows I wanted to watch. I am addicted to *19 + Counting* (which I could not find). Now there's a spin off show about the Duggar's equally insane, procreation-mad friends the Bates, called *United Bates of America*. They also have 19 kids, but have the added disadvantage of not having as much money and coming from somewhere in the south of America so their accents make them sound like in-bred hill billies. It's like coming from Somerset in the UK. You might be saying 'I accept this Nobel prize for neuroscience, with great pleasure' but what people hear is 'Lurleen, I done found some roadkill fer dinner'.
So, basically, could someone else in Australia check whether it is possible to buy *17 or 18 or 19 + counting* or *United Bates of America* in Australia?
Thank you.

1, I may be about to get a free Ipad. My co-worker’s husband who works in IT has several first generation Ipads that his institution is disposing of. I hope to score one, mostly so I can start reading e-books. Which you can on Ipads, right? Apparently e-books are now outselling books on Amazon so perhaps the long touted era of e-books has finally arrived? It has been heralded virtually annually since about 1990, so surely it must be nearly here, and I will be able to join in.
2, I admire my friend’s ability to know about matters I would consider obscure. For instance, Huckle’s recent masterly summaries of Olympic competitive sailing.
3, I have finally succeeded in setting up the meeting with Pearl’s school which I have been trying to make happen since May. Hooray! Now I need to finalise my list of issues to discuss and papers to bring in.

1, *Baby_Elvis* and Blinky spent the whole day yesterday. Having two adults around to three kids makes life much easier and more fun!
2, The husband of a co-worker has given me a huge screen, so now instead of having Pearl watch a stamp sized movie in the corner of my screen, she has a huge screen to herself.
3, Pearl had her hair cut today and looks cute as a button.
