Blood

Before it all recedes in my memory, I will describe another aspect of Ruby’s birth. One that will be of interest to all those who write whodunnits and one which should be skipped over by those who are squeamish.

I had what was classed as a small haemorrage - 800mils, less than a litre.

And yet how far it went! I think crime shows and murder mysteries don’t indicate how incredibly hard it would be to completely clean up after a murder.

There was, naturally, blood all over me and my clothes and the bed. And the floor under the bed. Piles of red towels in the corners of the room. Bloodied handprints on the walls from when I made my way to the toilet. Blood all around the bathroom, caked onto the basin. Footprints across the room. Blood on the light switches.

I guess the liquids went further because there was amniotic fluid to eke it along. But still, how much effort it must take to clean this kind of mess up. It made me think that:

1, being a cleaner at a hospital must suck; and
2, committing the perfect crime that a forensics expert cannot detect must be seriously difficult.
