So, friends, advice on computers.

1, a new Macbook - compatible with what I have now, lots more memory, under warranty.
2, a refurbished second hand Macbook - advantages, a third of the price, compatible.
3, an IBM laptop - cheap.

If you're happy with a Mac, I'd recommend Option 1 or Option 2, for the reasons of compatibility and familiarity.

Option 3 is likely to add significant frustration due to the differences between Mac & Windows, and the unexpected costs of replacing software / finding equivalents.

The choice between 1) and 2) comes down mostly to:

* Do you have the extra money for Option 1)
* Do you consider the additional memory & warranty (peace of mind) worth the price difference?
* Do you consider the opportunity cost acceptable?(ie what you'd not be able to buy if you went with a new MacBook vs if you had the extra money from going with the refurb option)
* How long do you want / expect the Macbook to last? If you're going long term (3 years plus), the new one with warranty is a better option, but at a third of the price, you could replace the refurb one sooner (eg in two years) if you needed.
* Is there any way you can get a warranty on a refurbished Macbook, either via AppleCare or third party? If so, that may be the best compromise.

Good luck!

prk.

Seconded, although prk says it with much more relevant detail than I would have thought of. Swapping basic user interface paradigms is always a steep learning curve.

but are you required to do any of the basic support work there? if so, I remove my recommendation. 'tis just that my memory of keeping the two OSs running was that I always had to stop and swap gears. But then, I haven't used a Windows machine since Windows 7 came out, so my information may be so woefully out of date that it isn't relevant.

Refurb, with as much RAM as you can afford.

This is not an answer to your question. But.

I recently read an article about Karl Lagerfeld and it said that his cat has an ipad.
