My children
Dec. 8th, 2011 07:45 pmThis is a conversation I have quite often with well-intentioned people.
Friend: Ruby will be fine soon. You worry too much. Look at Pearl! She is fine now!
Me: Thanks.
What I cannot say - because Pearl is always there - is no, actually, she isn't OK. She can walk beautifully but have you noticed her fine motor control? It was assessed last month as being in the bottom 5% for her age. Notice how she holds a pen like an 18-month old and paints by stabbing the brush at the page using her shoulders because her wrists are so weak.
We do OT every bloody day and she isn't OK, and the same thing lies before Ruby. And actually I can't say any of this because people always say it in front of Pearl.
But, perhaps, could people keep this in mind next time they want to say reassuringly that my kids are fine, I worry too much, and there really is no need for OT or physio.
