Pearl's likes and dislikes

Things Pearl loves:
· For the past two weeks she has been obsessed with Princesses. She likes their pretty dresses (and insists on wearing a dress over her tracksuit and shirt every day). She likes the fact that they dance and sing and that animals love them.
· Her new sparkly pink shoes. Two weeks on and she is still showing them to people and telling them how a lady in a shop gave them to her (ie. I bought them).
· Ponies. She’s very keen on her My Little Ponies, and I have become quite fond of them now I have had time to study them extensively. They have fascinating breeding patterns – no males so presumably they reproduce through parthenogenesis – but they mutate very quickly. From the Pegasus and unicorn to the pegacorn is one quick step.
· Ponies. She is also very fond of actual ponies, especially one Youtube clip showing miniature ponies doing show jumping.
· Ponies. She likes pretending to be a pony and has taken to correcting me when I say she is my little chickadee. ‘I a little pony, I a champion pony.’
· ‘Puter. She has, alas, become a Youtube addict. She watches little bits of the My Little Ponies show, song excerpts from Disney musicals and animations, and footage of animals.
· Baby animals of all sorts. She especially likes it when the animals are wrapped up in blankets or have toys like human babies. Or if they kiss each other.
· Dancing. She does her fairy dance at the drop of a hat. This consists of imitating the fairy in her music box, and turning round and round very solemnly with her arms held in the air.
· Baby_Elvis’s Blinky is one of her favourite people ever. She is two years older than Pearl and is so incredibly cool and clever and constantly teaches her new things (and also tells her off and bosses her about, which Pearl does not appear to notice). The other day they put on a concert which consisted of Blinky doing tricks she had learned at dance lessons, and Pearl crawling through a hoop and then squealing with excitement when she fell over.
· Helping her Pop. She struts around the back yard, following him and carrying a tiny hammer. When asked what she is doing, she will reply ‘working with Pop’.
Things Pearl hates:
· Having her toe nails cut. And when I say she hates it, I mean she freaks right out. It takes one person to hold her down and the other to do the nails, never more than one or two at a time, as she screams hysterically and weeps. (I seriously wonder whether she has a sensory overload problem as no other child I know gets into the state she does.)
· Having blood tests. Alas, she recognises the hospital room where it takes place. It takes two people to pin her and another to take the blood. She struggles so much that it takes 20-40 minutes on average. I absolutely loath it and have actually asked if they can give her a sedative before the tests (but they say no).
· Having her hair brushed. Her hair is fine, thin, and curly and gets tousled easily. She is not a fan of having it done but it must be brushed in order to give her the comb over which disguises the fact that she still only has hair on about 80% of her head.
· Loud noises. She hates the rubbish truck with a passion and detests birds with loud caws like seagulls and crows. She particularly dislikes toys that make sudden, unexpected noises. She often requests that the radio be turned down. She says ‘too loudy, too loudy’ which I think shows an excellent understanding of how adjectives are usually formed.
· Electric toys. Having been raised by Madame la technology killer, she has almost no experience with toys powered by anything other than the human hand. She runs away from remote controlled toy cars that seem to move by themselves. She thinks it is unnatural and wrong. (I am with her on this.)
· Activities which require her to try to do something several times. She gives up easily and requests help. I am not sure if this is characteristic of all toddlers or arises from her awareness that she does have more trouble with some things than other children do
